Because the nose is a defining feature of the face, rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed procedures in facial plastic surgery and is often one of the most challenging. The reason patients seek rhinoplasty are many and include trauma, breathing difficulties, or aesthetic concerns such as an undesirable hump or a bulky or asymetric tip. Otolaryngologists/Facial plastic surgeons are particularly well suited to addressing these concerns, because our training gives us broad exposure to techniques to address both functional and cosmetic problems of the nose. During the rhinoplasty operation the surgeon will attempt to achieve better harmony and symmetry for the varied components of the nose which include the bony and cartilaginous dorsum as well as the nasal tip. While most incisions occur in the nose, often a small, discrete incision between your nostrils will be necessary for appropriate access to fix the nose. The surgeon will perform subtle sculpting of the nose, attempt to improve breathing if appropriate and often will use small cartilage grafts to achieve both functional and cosmetic ends.
One of the most important aspects of rhinoplasty is good patient selection, a strong rapport and sense of trust between surgeon and patient as well as realistic expectations about the outcome. During your consultation we will examine your nose both inside and out and come up with a treatment plan that will hopefully be mutually acceptable. Armed with the information about what the goals will be for the surgery you, the patient can decide if rhinoplasty is for you.
